Antonio Cortés Rolón

He was born in the town of Cidra, Puerto Rico, in 1951. At his short age of 6 years old, Antonio began to show his interest in art, inspired by the numerous mountain views that surround him. Once a teenager, he was instructed in panoramic painting by the American painter Henry Morgan, and in modern art by the Puerto Rican artist Edwin Maurás.

He obtained his Bachelor degree in education with concentration in art from Universidad Interamericana de San Germán, Puerto Rico, in 1978. In order to continue his artistic development, Antonio traveled to New York where he obtained a Master degree in Fine Arts from the University of New York, in 1985. Eventually, he finished a doctorate degree in Museology from Universidad de Sevilla, Spain, in 2005, and in History of Art from Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe, in 2006. Antonio Cortés has shown to be a master through his artistic career, from his origin in portrait and panoramic painting, until reaching a figurative technique, with which he obtained international recognition with the “Emigrantes” series. Currently, Antonio is making incursion in the Pop Kitsch movement with the proposal “Un Actor en Casa Blanca – Imagen y Política”, which is a painting that highlight a monochromatic image that explore the relation between politics, celebrities and popular culture.
